Protector of the Small, First Test by Tamora Pierce images.jpg

“Girls are fragile, more emotional, easier to frighten.” Keladry of Mindelan must put up with this attitude when she becomes the first girl in a dozen years to take advantage of a decree that allows her to train as a knight, although because she is a girl she is on probation. She must endure teasing, snide remarks, and obvious attempts to discourage her and make her quit. However, “Kel” is a stubborn and courageous person who is determined to let nothing stand in the way of her goals. For example, on one occasion Kel is pushed and bullied by Joren during practice. Then she watches as another page is bullied by him and his friends. Bravely she confronts them in the library and has a terrific fight with them. She comes out bruised and injured but has shown them her fortitude and strength of character. At the end of the novel Kel is involved with a horrendous battle with the Spidren which are spider-like monsters. She finishes her year wondering whether she will be back for the next year of training. You’ll have to read the book to find out if she is able to continue her pursuit to become a knight.

Although the novel “First Test” was a bit slow to start with, once the plot started to develop it became an interesting book to read. I enjoyed reading about the characters and Kel’s first year journey to become a page. Kel is a strong individual who has amazing personal strength and courage. She is a great model of character who shows courage and determination when faced with adversity. I think many girls will enjoy how she shows her strong character when faced with the physical challenges of becoming a knight plus the unfairness of how she is treated just because she is a girl. If you enjoy fantasy novels about adventure, bravery, and facing personal challenges this book is for you. Plus, if you get hooked on the plot and characters you’re in luck--there are two more novels in the series and Tamora Pierce has written many other fantasy novels.
I would give this book a 7 out of 10.
